Mighty Cardinal Marching Band
The Melissa High School Band Program, home of the Mighty Cardinal Band in Melissa, Texas, is defined by a proud tradition of artistic excellence, technical precision, and competitive achievement. The program utilizes a tiered Varsity and Junior Varsity structure to foster student growth, performance mastery, and competitive success for all enrolled students.

Texas State UIL Marching Band Contest: 5 Appearances, 4x Finalist, Silver & Bronze Medalist
2026 5A UIL Area B Finals: 5th Place

Melissa Varsity Marching Band
The flagship competitive ensemble representing Melissa High School. Composed of auditioned wind musicians, percussionists (battery and front ensemble), and the Color Guard, this group represents the highest standard of performance in the program.
Focus & Curriculum: Advanced marching drill, intricate field choreography, complex musical arrangements, and high-level ensemble coordination.
Performances & Contests: Performs at all Varsity Friday night football games, UIL Marching Band Contests (regularly advancing to Area and State competitions), and major regional invitationals such as Bands of America (BOA).
Expectations: High time commitment, including extensive summer conditioning camps, after-school rehearsals, individual sectionals, private lessons, and TMEA All-Region auditions.
Melissa JV Marching Band
The primary foundational and developmental marching ensemble. Designed to prepare underclassmen and developing musicians for varsity-level rigor, the JV band emphasizes core fundamentals while giving students active performance experience.
Focus & Curriculum: Mastery of basic marching techniques, posture, spatial awareness, tone production while in motion, and rhythm reading.
Performances: Performs at varsity football games and community showcases (e.g., pep rallies and parades), offering students consistent live field experience.
Path to Progression: Provides a supportive environment with less time commitment than the varsity-level that builds confidence and technical proficiency, directly preparing members to audition for and step into Varsity positions in subsequent seasons.
Wind Ensemble & Symphonic Band
Placement in the Melissa High School Wind Ensemble (Varsity) and Symphonic Band (Non-Varsity) is achieved through a competitive audition process. Highlighted by national acclaim, the Wind Ensemble was recently chosen to participate in the 2027 Music for All National Concert Festival.
Student Requirements:
Private lesson enrollment
TMEA Region Band auditions (All-State track)
Solo & Ensemble contest participation
Participation in Marching Band & UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Evaluation
Attendance at all required band activities and performances
Concert Band & Cardinal Band
Admittance to the Concert Band (Sub Non-Varsity A) and Cardinal Band (Sub Non-Varsity B) is open to all high school band students through an audition process.
Ensemble Expectations:

Participation in Marching Band & UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Evaluation
Attendance at all required band events and performances
Strongly Encouraged: Private lesson enrollment and TMEA Region Band auditions
Color Guard
The Color Guard serves as the dynamic visual and auxiliary performance unit of the Mighty Cardinal Marching Band during the fall season, transitioning into the standalone competitive Melissa High School Winter Guard each spring.

Melissa Percussion
The Melissa Percussion program develops successful, well-rounded musicians by building a strong, holistic foundation in music performance. Student placement within the program is determined by performance audition.
